Attention Active Fire Department Members:  Under-Collection of Pension Contributions for Pay Periods 11 & 12

LAFPP staff has been advised by the Controller's Office that due to a payroll system error, pension contributions for Pay Period #11 for members of MOU 23 (Firefighters & Fire Captains) and Pay Period #12 for members of both MOU 23 AND MOU 22 (Fire Chief Officers) were under-collected.  Approximately 3,000 Fire Department employees were affected in each pay period.

It appears that the problem relates to pay raises processed for MOU 23 (Firefighters & Fire Captains), MOU 25 (Police Officers, Captain and Above), and MOU 22 (Fire Chief Officers) in Pay Periods 11 and 12, where a few new bonuses were introduced.  Some of the new bonuses were not coded as being "pensionable" and were therefore not included in the pension contribution calculation.

While the system error has been corrected by the Office of the Controller going forward, in accordance with LAFPP Board Rule 5.3, affected members' pay checks on 12/28/2011 will be adjusted to collect the missed pension contribution. Note that the average "under-deduction" was approximately $20 each pay period.
