Police Department Active Board Member Special Election

Commissioner Donald Keith will retire from the Board of Fire and Police Pension Commissioners on November 30, 2008.  His retirement will leave the Police Department Active Board Member seat vacant with an unexpired term of 18 months, beginning December 1, 2008 and through June 30, 2010.  The City Clerk, in conjunction with the Department of Fire and Police Pensions, is conducting a Special Election for the unexpired term.

The Special Election is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9, 2008.  Nominations and voting are open to all sworn active members of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who are members of the Pension Fund.  LAPD Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP) members are also eligible to participate in this election.    

The following is a brief description of the election process:

  • Qualified candidates must submit nominating petitions signed by at least 100 qualified voters.  Nominating petitions will be available in the City Clerk’s Office on July 22, 2008.  Signed petitions must be submitted to the same office no later than 5:00 pm on August 5, 2008.
  • Along with the signed petitions, candidates may submit a statement describing their background and qualifications for the position (not to exceed 250 words).
  • The City Clerk prepares a ballot with the names of all candidates and mails the ballot and the qualification statements to qualified voters who are eligible to vote at least 30 days prior to the election (see Notes).
  • A copy of the Notice of Election and sample ballot will be posted in the City Clerk Election Division on August 11, 2008.

Note 2:      Members who become active within 30 days of the election may cast ballots in person at the City Clerk Election Division, located at Piper Technical Center, 555 Ramirez Street, Space 300, Los Angeles, CA 90012, after securing an eligibility certificate verifying their employment from the Personnel Department.  The first day to obtain this certificate is September 2, 2008.  For more information about the eligibility certificate, contact Patricia Morales, Personnel Department, at (213) 473-9054.
