There are currently 6 tiers provided to the sworn members of the Fire, Police, Harbor, and Airport Departments of Los Angeles.

Your tier membership is determined by the date you were hired. However, please note that there are certain exceptions that may occur based on personnel actions such as re-appointments, re-instatements and elections to transfer tiers. All members in Tier 1 are retired, and members in Tiers 2-5 have both active and retired members. Tier 6 is the only open tier accepting new members.
