DESCRIPTION

The Internal Audit Section reports to the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners (Board) and administratively to the General Manager. It is staffed with three audit positions and is responsible for conducting audits and coordinating audit activities by our external auditors and the Charter-mandated management audits. Continuing education is provided through attendance at industry conferences and webinars and we maintain membership in the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA) and the Association of Public Pension Fund Auditors (APPFA).

Duties are as follows: Conduct compliance, operational, and performance audits of the Department’s operations in accordance with professional auditing standards. Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of processes, perform research, assess internal controls, and interview relevant personnel. Develop appropriate procedures to meet audit/project objectives and establish and meet reasonable time estimates. Collect, compile, analyze and interpret data using data analytics techniques. Identify problems and solutions. Prepare audit workpapers that adequately support the work performed and audit conclusions. Prepare initial draft reports and present audit results and recommendations to management and the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. Assist with risk assessment and special projects, including preparation for external peer reviews.


ANNUAL SALARY
$75,690 – $110,643


REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

  1. Two years of full-time paid experience as an Auditor with the City of Los Angeles, or in a class at least at that level, conducting financial or program audits in accordance with Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards; or 
     
  2. Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university and two years of full-time paid experience conducting performance, compliance, information systems, operations, financial or program audits in accordance with professional auditing standards.

A Master’s degree in business, accounting, economics, finance, public administration, political science computer science, engineering, law or designation as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement.
